Abstract:
In the course of the energy transition renewable sources of energy continuously gain in importance. Even so far unexploited resources become a focus of public interest. In this context the present doctoral dissertation investigates the potential role wastewater could play within a future energy supply system. Results show, that the heat content of wastewater could provide interesting opportunities. This is due to the fact that significant amounts of heat are available and can be provided rather climate-friendly (in an Austrian context) as well as at competitive costs as several case studies show. Consequently, wastewater heat could certainly serve as one building block of a future energy mix on local level. The related barriers, anyway, seem to be manageable. The present work provides suggestions for related solutions and indicates specific areas for action to further establish wastewater as a renewable source of energy on an Austrian-wide level. As the topic involves several disciplines (wastewater management, energy management, spatial planning, and stakeholder management), all strategic developments should be pursuit in an interdisciplinary context considering all related fields and institutions.
