Abstract:
The capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is a species of high concern for nature conservationists and for hunters. This, the maintenance and recondition of appropriate habitats and stable populations is a major target in capercaillie management. This study aimed to assess the habitat suitability (HSI) for the capercaillie in the Gesäuse National Park (Styria). The expertise is based in the HSI model of STORCH (1999), which was developed in the Bavarian Alps. It complains a set of habitat parameters, which are necessary to value the suitability. The verification and modification model is done on the basis if presence or absence data (indirect signs if capercaillie). In the current study, the study design of STORCH (1999) was modified, amplifying the search area for indirect sign per sample plot. In the following, three different HSI- models were derived including a locally adapted model by Zollner. The original model of STORCH (1999) and a model incorporating the additional search areas per sample point. These three models were calculated and compared. The amplification of the search area led so a pronounced increase in the proportion of sample points with indirect capercaillie signs. Furthermore, the supplemental search plots enabled a local adaptation of the model in terms of significant correlations between habitat suitability and capercaillie presence.
