In this work, a simplified model for the origin of wood colour on solid wood surfaces is proposed. According to this model, the colour impression of solid wood surfaces is mainly influenced by the factors reflected electromagnetic waves, surface roughness, inner structure and refraction index. For the exemplary trials following types of wood were used: Poplar (Populus sp.), Walnut (Juglans regia) and Ebony (Diospyros sp.). By means of thin layers of wood was examined how far light can enter the wood surface and is reflected from deeper layers of wood. For this, the variable light reflection depth (LRD) was introduced. LRD was additionally determined for samples coated with various oils and varnishes, as well as water-wetted and impregnated samples. In addition, the effect of the gloss was examined for the colour impression of solid wood samples.
