Intrafamilial and extrafamilial farm successions have a profound impact on the development of agriculture as they are pivotal to the continuation of farm businesses and thus farmers' spheres of activity. The design and implementation of the process of handing down and taking over the family farm or, respectively, the search for a suitable extrafamilial successor, is crucial for successful farm transfers. Using methods of Landscape Planning and drawing from semi-structured interviews, the present thesis investigates this transition process which sets the course for the future life and work of both, the retiring and the entering generation, in seven farm businesses in Villach-Land District, [Austria]. The background and motivations of the successors are discussed along with how accommodation and the division of labor are organized by the two generations. In addition, the various opportunities of farmers who do not have family members wanting to continue to farm, as well as agricultural policy conditions and counseling services for farm succession/transfer in Austria are examined. Finally, planning recommendations based on the findings of the study are provided in order to help farm families during the succession/transfer process.
