In the present scientific thesis there are analyzed three naturally designed open spaces close to residential areas in Vorarlberg on their open space qualities. The research is carried out through the critical theory and the structuralistic landscape and open space planning. The main scientific questions are, if these natural designed open spaces can improve their users’ possibilities of action in their daily life and satisfy their general needs in open spaces. Additionally it is examined, which possibilities of getting in contact with nature do users of these open spaces have and which attitudes towards natural open space design can be recommended. The results of this thesis contribute to open space planning and show that natural designed open spaces can definitely offer individual opportunities to their users as far as they are designed according to the planning principles which are shown in this thesis. Through using these principles it is possible to achieve also social advantages other than the economic and ecologic ones. Furthermore depending on the different area types (grassland, forest, waters) one should also include natural forestry and natural water management in the planning process as heterodyne usage brings additional advantages. The results are creative, sustainable and multi-functional open spaces in settlement areas
