The present master thesis deals with the topic of open spaces for children in the city. Using examples in the densely built-up urban area and on the outskirts of Vienna, the use of open spaces of children will be examined. It will be analyzed which open spaces are available for children in the city and what differences regarding the use can be identified between the two areas. Martha Muchow’s theory and way of working, which focus on the living environment of children, form the basis of my methodical approach. For the survey two elementary schools in Vienna were chosen for organizing each a lesson in a fourth class. One school is located in the densely built-up urban area, in the 9th district - Marktgasse and the other elementary school is located on the outskirts of Vienna, in the 21st district - Dr.-Skala-Straße. Through the work with the pupils their distances traveled and visited destinations in everyday life and during the holidays should be explored together. Results show that the use of open spaces due to the different offering of open spaces in the densely built-up urban area and on the outskirts significantly differ from each other. The areas have various qualities and deficits which influence the leisure behavior of the children. Finally, planning recommendations as possible proposals to improve the open spaces with regard to children are formulated.
