- Abstract:
- Silver fir has been used in various areas of applications, ranging from civil engineering to furniture construction. In countless literature references and from historic traditions, the utilization of silver fir for hydraulic engineering is frequently referred to. This master thesis examines material characteristics of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) with respect to various applications. Particularly, the historical use of silver fir in hydraulic engineering and earthwork purposes is discussed in detail. The questions arise, whether silver fir was actually used for these special purposes, and which other wood species were used as well. The selected approach was an analysis of historical constructions in the hydraulic engineering and earthwork sector, especially watermills. Based on wood identification data, dendrochronological data of around 47 mills in Austria, and on an in-depth study of 122 historical literature sources, the historical significance and suitability of silver fir for hydraulic engineering and earthwork purposes could be demonstrated. Literature reporting physical-mechanical properties and durability for silver fir and other species (oak, larch, spruce, pine, and black pine) was analysed as well. Analyses of 256 samples obtained from water wheels revealed 7% silver fir, 78% larch, 6% undefined species, 5% oak and 4% spruce, black pine, mahaleb cherry and hardwood. In conclusion, silver fir was definitely favoured in hydraulic engineering and for earthwork purposes, though not exclusively. Species such as larch, oak and pine wood have been also preferred for the same type of application.
