This master thesis deals with the topic of an open space planning investigation by the example of the Schulgarten Kagran in the twenty-second district of Vienna, and its relevance as an urban space. Both the open space of the Schulgarten Kagran and the urban quarter will be explored. The research regarding metatheory and methodology of landscape planning but also the open space planning theory form the basis of the paper. The set of methods combines the research of literature and the open-space-planning-stocktaking. Thereby a mapping of existing land uses can be created from which principals for the socio-economic organization of the Schulgarten Kagran will be derived. In addition, by analysing the construction and space structures of the urban quarter, existing recreation areas and the requirements of the residents will be investigated. Furthermore, by comparing sectoral planning instruments and their strategies, it will be tried to deduce the developments of the urban quarter. Subsequently the existing recreation areas and the quality of the Schulgarten Kagran as an urban space can be discussed. The aim of this master thesis is to show that the Schulgarten Kagran is not only a high-quality education location in the fields of horticulture and floristry but also that it has be the potential to make a valuable contribution as an open space in urban quarter. A central result of the paper is that the western part of the Schulgarten area, including buildings and the flower show is required for high-quality vocational education, for the running of the Wiener Stadtgärten and for open air events. For this reason, the western area is not publicly available. However, the eastern area of the Schulgarten Kagran, which resembles a park, holds the potential as a public open space. Therefore, the eastern area should be made accessible for the public after appropriate development.
