Due to substantial city growth and the expansion of the U2 subway line, which allows the 22nd Viennese district to be more integrated in the heart of the city, the same district is bound to change considerably in the upcoming years. The construction of the U2 above ground, for example, paves the way for spots below the support structure of the metro line to emerge. These spaces, currently used for different reasons, may serve as part of open space supply for the future. By analyzing the U2 rail line and its surrounding environment, this Master Thesis sets out to provide a contribution to the open space development of the region from a landscaping and architectural view. The basis of the underlying thesis was the possible inclusion of the rail line in an open space group. This was tested through the following steps: first, the current state of research on green spaces and open spaces was investigated and their functions concerning the city and its users displayed. At the same time, an in-depth critical analysis of the location was carried out by taking landscaping walking tours and conducting interviews with experts, yielding opportunities and challenges of the project. Finally, city planning models of the City of Vienna and future developments of the project region on a strategic and operational planning level were examined. The results of the investigation, which were set in context with the current state of research, led to planning recommendations for the project area. More specifically, the documented recommendations were formulated in an open space concept for the entire project area and two planning drafts for selected areas. Furthermore, the use of the U2 line as a linear element of the open space group was confirmed in the course of this Master Thesis. By integrating the open spaces of the U2 rail line in its environment, several open spaces of the project area can be connected to each other within walking distance. In addition, new open spaces can emerge.
