Abstract:
This master thesis investigates school grounds of five elementary schools from various federal provinces of Austria. The aim of the thesis is to find out how school grounds must be designed to be used by all pupils regardless of gender, religion, origin or any possible physical limitations and how these aspects were dealt with in the five selected case studies. The present work is closely related to the work on the subject of school grounds by Juliane Forsthuber, which is being published at the same time. A spatial survey on the selected school grounds was carried out. Methodically, Mental Maps as well as guided interviews were applied for obtaining information on the use and planning of school grounds. In a further step the case studies were analysed and compared on the basis of the “principles for designing school grounds” by the ÖISS (Austrian Institute for School and Sport Facilities Construction). It results that in planning gender-sensitive and barrier-free school grounds, principles such as multifunctionality, user participation, changeability and security must be ensured. Additional contributions to the experience and play value for all user groups should be made next to technical and constructional improvements. These new findings have been amalgamated in planning recommendations for high quality school grounds considering equal opportunities for all.
