This master’s thesis discusses the topic of public playground areas specifically dedicated to people with special demands while presenting examples in Austria (Vienna) and Germany (Frankfurt, Sinsheim). Based on the theoretical planning background of landscape and free urban space, I will present a framework consisting of literature research, various landscape planning methods, an analysis of urban free space regarding structurally spatial and socioeconomic organization, as well as statements of commitment and worth postures. The selection of examples was chosen to picture playground areas in differing contexts of urban planning. The reference framework ranges from neighborhood, district and full municipal related free space. With the help of the introduced theoretical background I will define principles to guarantee equal opportunities in the utilization of free spaces. These principles shall be implemented in future planning projects to enable accessibility for people with special needs. The results of this study show that the integration into an urban context has a comparably low effect on the intensity of utilization. Other factors such as the distance to social and private institutions and functionally related, locally public urban free space as well as public transportation system are more important factors in this regard.
