In Austria the Animal Needs Index TGI 35 L/1995 is used to assess animal welfare on farms. For a reliable use, it is necessary to investigate the validity of TGI 35 L assessments. It was to be investigated if there are connections between animal welfare assessed by the TGI 35 L and selected behavioural parameters of fattening pigs. For this purpose animal behaviour was monitored in 6 different housing systems for fattening pigs. 66 animals were directly observed during daytime for two days. The observations included data on resting behaviour, eliminative behaviour, comfort behaviour, social behaviour and exploration behaviour. The collected data were analysed descriptively and afterwards correlations between the results of the TGI assessment and behavioural parameters were estimated. The statistical calculations were made on three levels of the TGI 35 L: Total TGI-Score, five assessment sections of the TGI and 22 single criteria. Significant correlations between the TGI score and animal behaviour were found in all levels of the TGI. Especially there were found a lot of correlations between parameters of behavioural disturbances and the result of the TGI assessment in all levels. A close link between the housing system and behavioural disturbances is assumed. From the results it can be concluded that a high TGI score indicates a high level of animal welfare. The Animal Needs Index TGI 35 L is a suitable tool to assess aminal welfare on commercial farms.
