Abstract:
The present thesis studies city farming in Vienna and how its existence can be ensured in the long run. It examines six organic farms in Vienna, focusing on their outline conditions, individual scopes of action and prospects by analysing the farms and interviewing the people who run them. The theoretical interpretation is based on the comparison and typification of the farms. Apart from the economic pressure caused by decreasing producer prices in organic wholesale, the location within Vienna creates specific outline conditions. The vicinity to the consumers permits manifold forms of direct marketing and favours local exchange. The fact that other users connected to urban development but also to landscape design also have a grip on agricultural areas threatens the existence of city farming. According to their individual scope of action, the farms adapt to these conditions in different ways, ranging from specialisation and expansion to more direct marketing and reduced production, the offer of services or a subsistence-oriented peasant economy. On the planner¿s behalf, the long-term availability of agricultural areas has to be guaranteed to ensure peasant economy. In this context the thesis proposes the creation of an appropriate category in the zoning plan for agriculturally used areas, a form of landscape planning that guarantees the cultivation of land instead of landscape design favouring the use for recreational and leisure activities, and the orientation of the ¿Agrarstruktureller Entwicklungsplan¿ (agricultural-structural development plan) towards an overall preservation of agricultural areas, though the intensity of their exploitation may differ.
