This case study deals with the importance of alpine pastures for a farm in Ennstal/Upper Austria. Reason fort his study is an ongoing revue of the rights and regulations to use alpine pastures as well as the re-organisation of the land which includes the separation of woods and pastures. Historicly this approach goes back to the Grundentlastung“ (JAHRESZAHL). Since then agricultural departments are trying to simplify the complexity of different uses of alpine pastures and through clarifying the legal circumstances, re-organisizing the land and entangling of different types of use. The case study is based on detailed surveys of the farm, interviews with the farmers and mapping of the vegetation of the alpine pasture which belongs to the farm. This approach provides a profound knowledge of the economy and organisation of the farm and the alpine pasture. Based on these results the author discusses the impact of the new regulations on the ecomomy of the farm as well as role models and values which are reflected in the regulation. The thesis ends with an alternative proposal for the re-organisation of the alpine pasture. The aim of this proposal is to maintain and provide economical and sustainable opportunities for the farmers.
