Energy efficiency is one option of the farmer to lower production costs and remain competitive. One possibility to reduce energy consumption is the economization of fuel usage when operating with agricultural machinery. Fuel expenditure amount to about 40 % of the costs of the machinery. Fuel consumption of the continuous variable transmission compared to the classical power shift transmission is discussed controversially. This thesis compares the fuel consumption of a tractor with continuous variable transmission to one with a power shift transmission. Further, this work analyses the impact of the driving speed of mowing on fuel consumption. By executing two mowing trials with different driving speeds and a transport trial with the need of high drag force, the fuel consumption was recorded and compared. For carrying out the trials, the two tractors Agrofarm 430 Profiline (power shift) and Agrofarm 430 TTV (continuous variable transmission) of Deutz-Fahr were used, which differ only in the kind of transmission. Each trial was repeated three times. The trials showed that the tractor with continuous variable transmission operating at a mowing speed of 11,5 km/h uses about 9,8 % (0,30 l/ha) and at a mowing speed of 16 km/h about 9,3%. (0,23 l/ha) more fuel than the power shift transmission, in relation to the acreage. As expected, with higher driving speeds the fuel consumption per unit of time increases, but also the acreage performance increases which, altogether, leads to a fuel reduction of 17 % for both tractors. The transport trial showed that the continuous variable transmission consumes 12,8 % (0.027 l/km) more fuel, in relation to the path length. Altogether, the fuel consumption of the shift transmission exceeds the one of the continuous variable transmission in any case of about 9 – 13 % which highlights the superiority of the power shift gear. The most important reason of the reduction is the higher mechanical efficiency factor of the shift transmission.
