The current diploma thesis deals with seven farms, who participated in the development of a "care farming" project in the period from 1996-1999. The project is focused by two perspectives: First, the thesis looks into how this new income possibility at the farm, such as the investments that were made and the care giving itself, provides acting opportunities for farmers. Second, the situation of elderly people in rural areas is analyzed and it is discussed, if life at a farm can be a satisfying alternative to traditional care institutions, such as family care and nursing homes. In this study care is given by farming women. What kind of conditions offer equal opportunitues for women and men and how can aspects of good quality landscape planning influence common life at the farm? To answer this questions, the reviewed farms were tabularly compared with each other and results were interpreted. The comparison is based on spatial information as well as information from care farmers and inhabitants, generated in interviews. Furthermore the findings at hand were related to existing instruments of social supply for elderly people and the surrounding conditions, which were negotiated within the project. Out oft the comparison recommendations are made, which value the subsistence and care-oriented work of farming women and encourage imitations.
