Exemplified by Steinhaus/Ahrntal, a village and popular tourist destination since the 1950es located in a South-Tyrolean valley this thesis researches the influence of tourism on the quality of buildings and open spaces for permanent residents and tourists. The method applied is a hermeneutical approach in the tradition of a critical landscape and open space theory. The author analyses the quality of the current built and open space structures of the village and of selected houses with tourist accommodation in terms of their usability and ability to be adjusted for new or changing demands from the owners and their guests. The analysis of the geneses of the village and the development of tourism in the valley provides a deeper understanding of the context of the current situation. Furthermore, a detailed research of the underlying role models and values aims at a better understanding of the spatial changes of the villages and of selected houses and their open spaces. The thesis concludes with planning solutions for the village and for private gardens. The proposals main objective is to provide high quality open spaces for both the owners and the guest by valuing needs and demands equally. Planning to provide self-determined use of public and privat places it´s the aim of the principles of planning and advices.
