MISO - Material Inputs, Stocks and Outputs: A model of global material stocks and flows
Abstract
Das Wachstum des globalen Ressourcenverbrauchs hat sich in den letzten Jahren beschleunigt, dabei wird die Belastbarkeit des Planeten schon jetzt überschritten. Ein besseres Verständnis des Stoffwechsels der Gesellschaft ist von grundlegender Bedeutung für eine Reduktion des Ressourcenverbrauches und für Strategien nachhaltiger Entwicklung. Bislang hat sich die Erforschung des Stoffwechsels auf Flüsse von Material konzentriert (z.B.: Entnahme, Handel, Verbrauch) und dabei wichtige Einblicke gewonnen. Den sozio-ökonomischen Beständen von Material die in Infrastrukturen und Gebäuden über Jahrzehnte gebunden sind, wurde weniger Aufmerksamkeit zu teil. Dabei wird immer deutlicher, dass gerade diese Bestände und ihre langfristigen Wirkungen auf den Ressourcenbedarf von zentraler Bedeutung für die zukünftige Entwicklung des Materialverbrauches sind. Dieses Projekt füllt Forschungslücken in diesem Bereich und liefert zum ersten Mal eine umfassende Abschätzung der Entwicklung der globalen gesellschaftlichen Materialbestände. Dafür wird ein dynamisches Stock-Flow Modell entwickelt, das aufbauend auf einer Materialflussdatenbank eine Abschätzung aller gesellschaftlichen Bestände seit 1900 ermöglicht. Damit lässt sich nicht nur die Bestandsentwicklung nach Materialgruppen und Weltregionen ermitteln, sondern auch, welchen Einfluss Recycling und Lebensdauer von Beständen auf den gesellschaftlichen Stoffwechsel, den Bedarf an neuen Materialien und die Potentiale zur Kreislaufführung von Material in der Ökonomie haben. Im Gegensatz zu bisherigen Studien, die sich meist auf einzelne Substanzen (Z.B: Kupfer) konzentrieren, wird erstmals eine konsistente Erfassung sämtlicher Bestände angestrebt, inklusive einer systematischen Quantifizierung von Unsicherheiten. Nach einer Analyse der Ergebnisse bezüglich Mustern und Entwicklungspfaden, Relationen von Material-Beständen und Flüssen, sowie Zusammenhänge mit wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung, Wohlstand und Stoffwechselindikatoren, werden im prospektiven Teil mit dem Modell Stoffwechselszenarien bis 2050 berechnet. Die Ergebnisse des Projektes tragen nicht nur zu einem tieferen Verständnis der Funktionsweise und Dynamiken des gesellschaftlichen Stoffwechsels bei, sondern zeigen auch Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Strategien einer nachhaltigen Ressourcennutzung auf. Wir zeigen, dass eine Reduktion des Materialverbrauches und das Erreichen einer „circular economy“ maßgeblich von Größe, Design und Lebensdauer der gesellschaftlicher Bestände abhängt. Auf dieser Grundlage lassen sich bessere Modelle und Prognosen für die zukünftige Entwicklung des Materialbedarfes, von Abfallmengen und Recyclingpotential entwickeln und damit neue Strategien nachhaltiger Ressourcennutzung und plausible Reduktionsziele ableiten.
