Abstract
Wiederbewaldung wird in der Klimapolitik derzeit als Klimaschutzmaßnahme gewertet, weil Kohlenstoff in Wäldern gebunden wird. Aus der sozial-ökologischen Langzeitforschung wissen wir aber, dass Übergänge von Entwaldung zu Wiederbewaldung („forest transitions“) dann auftreten, wenn Industrialisierungsprozesse die Wälder entlasten. Dazu zählen die Substitution von Brennholz durch fossile Energieträger, die Industrialisierung der Landwirtschaft oder der Import von Biomasse. HEFT untersucht die „versteckten Emissionen“, die durch diese Prozesse freigesetzt werden, und setzt sie in Bezug zur Kohlenstoffsenke in Wäldern. Dazu wird ein Methodeninventar entwickelt, das ökologische und gesellschaftliche Treibhausgasemissionen quantifiziert und die versteckten Emissionen von Wiederbewaldungsprozessen ausweist. „Forest transitions“ werden in Europa im 19. Jahrhundert, in Nordamerika im 20. Jahrhundert und in Südostasien in den letzten Jahrzehnten auf lokaler, nationaler und regionaler Ebene in ihren soziopolitischen Kontexten untersucht und eine globale Analyse wird durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse ermöglichen die Identifikation von mehr oder weniger „klimafreundlichen“ Wiederbewaldungsprozessen und liefern damit relevante Erkenntnisse für den Klimaschutz.
