Party formation and values of local leaders in Central Europe 1991-1995.
Abstract
The main objective was to link statistical information on voting patterns in six Central European countries with results of surveys of local leaders in 142 communities in those countries. The hypothesis formulated in the proposal stated that voting behavior reflecting processes of party formation in Central Europe can be explained by political characteristics of local communities and their leaders. It was also expected, that in addition to explanations based on country differences, some general patterns can be established for the whole region. The approach was to compare medium-size communities in six countries and explain peoples´ involvement reflected in electoral votes by selected structural characteristics of those communities and their leaders. Samples of communities and leaders were taken from the surveys in the Democracy and Local Governance research project administered in 1991-1993 in Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania and Austria and repeated in 1995-1996 in all those countries except Austria.
