Land degradation which resulted from unsustainable land management has been an obstacle to rural development in Ethiopia. Efforts have been made to combat land degradation and to achieve economic development. Informal institutions are among those institutions working in the development affairs of the community. However, studies which investigate the role of informal institutions in common pool resources (CPRs) management are lacking. This research project is initiated to generate qualitative and quantitative information on the potentials and challenges of informal institutions in CPRs management. Endogenous and exogenous factors that affect the functioning of informal institutions are investigated. The research will come up with a clear understanding of benefits, flaws of the informal institutional arrangements involved in sustainable CPRs management, and recommendations on how the informal institutions can better interact with the prevailing formal institutions.
