Evaluation of risks in torrential catchments - potential dangers due to runoff and erosion
Abstract
About 2/3 of Austrias alpine region consits to 75-100% of torrential catchments, 1/3 to 50-75%. The 8935 torrents in Austria cause damage of national importance annually. Because of the increase in settlement and infrastructure as well as various, sometimes overlaying interests in exploitation of all natural areas the evaluation of risks has gained a political and technical importance that cannot be neglected any more in responsible development planning. This evaluation of risks can only be carried out with the help of complex mathematic-dynamical function models, where the interaction of the effects of precipitation - geology/geomorphology/geomechanics - soil/soil hydrology - vegetation - antropogene influence - runoff can be tested in a comprehensible way.
