The mission of PPT4 is to extend and adapt two different modeling techniques (statistical and biogeochemical models) to assess specific forest ecosystem restoration needs. The tree population model PROGNAUS will be used to predict basal area increment of individual trees as it depends on site, soil and stand mixture types. In combination with our biogeochemical modeling efforts this research will help us to explain the mechanistic component of possible growth changes and to quantify the growth of individual trees during different restoration phases. Recent advantages in physiological research have improved our knowledge of the radiation balance, the trade off between carbon fixation and transpiration losses, respiration, plant nutrition requirements, littering and decomposition processes. Using biogiochemical modeling techniques, we will integrate this information and address forest ecosystem restoration needs. Our goal is to adapt and extend an existing biogeochemical model so that it adequately addresses and integrates the energy, water, nutrition and carbon flux within forest ecosystems.
