Development of a method to assess the future aquaculture potential in Austria
Abstract
The Austrian Strategy for promoting national aquaculture aims for an increase of self-sufficiency in the production of freshwater fish. Consequently, it is essential to know the limits of future aquaculture potential in Austria. Currently, there is no standardized method to assess the sustainable production limit. Therefore, aquaTool aims for the development of a suitable method to assess the aquaculture potential in Austria (especially for trout farming) under consideration of natural conditions, existing uses and legal frameworks. Within this project, a methodical procedure to assess, combine and analyse natural conditions including water availability, water quality, and space availability, potential conflicts with existing uses and/or the aim of sustainable water use (e.g. water conservation and environmental protection) will be developed, to estimate the limits of additional aquaculture production in Austria. While aquaTool aims for the development of the basic methodology, the developed procedure will then be tested and applied in the parallel project aquaNovum (Research project to assess the aquaculture project in Austria”; funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund), to assess the limits of sustainable aquaculture production in Austria under consideration of different scenarios.
