Eco Balance - Smart Decisions for an Economic-Ecological Balance of Green Spaces in Vienna
Abstract
Urban green spaces have shifted into the focus of sustainable urban development in recent years because green areas and elements play an important role in the development of liveable and resilient cities. Well planned and executed urban green spaces provide essential ecosystem services such as biodiversity and climate regulation and are furthermore key aspects for the well-being of citizens and the quality of life in densely populated regions. Global climate change, ecosystem changes and increased user pressure due to the limited space available, represent major challenges that can be actively addressed through holistic and forward-looking planning and implementation of green structures. However, decisions need well-founded knowledge about resource input and environmental effects in order to be able to choose the systems that offer the best performance in the medium and long term, economically, ecologically and environmentally. Eco Balance will carry out life cycle assessment (LCA) of urban vegetation systems in order to quantify the resource use and linked environmental impacts of the respective variants. A decision support tool (DST) based on the LCA results is developed and will help to identify the critical economic and ecological parameters early in the decision support process to support adapted solutions and transparent, sustainable decisions in the field of urban green space design in Vienna. The system's flexible design is intended to ensure transferability to other urban green space structures and integration into existing programmes, activities and databases of the City of Vienna.
