Abstract
'Research Initiative Against Forest Decline' (FIW) is an interdisciplinary research programme which is focused on the causal interpretation of decline phenomena, and on the development of strategies for forest ecosystem rehabilitation. Several groups of scientists, mainly affiliated to Austrian universities, are involved. The investigated subjects are forest ecosystems where either Norway spruce or oak species are dominant (FIW II Spruce, FIW II Oak). Concerning spruce forests, three case studies have been made in Austria, and in a 'General Synopsis' results shall be synthesised (see project FIW II - General Synopsis).
Studies on oak forests were devoted to generate a survey of oak decline in an ecosystemic context in Austria, as a basis of following causal analyses.
