Greenhouse Gas Mitigation for Organic and Conventional Dairy Production (MIDAIR)
Abstract
As part of the post-Kyoto process, greenhouse gas mitigation options within agriculture must be explored. MIDAIR aims to identify region and system specific, cost-effective GHG mitigation measures and strategies for organic and conventional dairy production in Europe. The first phase of MIDAIR will provide a description of GHG emissions from dairy production within five regions; both modelling and targeted measurements to fill gaps of knowledge are needed to describe GHG emissions at this level of resolution. In the second phase, the developed models are extended to identify cost-effective mitigation measures and strategies, assisted by data from studies of various specific management options. After up-scaling, the GHG mitigation potential for all dairy regions in Europe will be quantified. Agronomic, environmental and socio-economic consequences of complete and partial adoption will be assessed and recommendations, given at the farm level, will be presented to farmers, scientists and policy makers. The MIDAIR consortium consists of 17 partners from 11 European countries. The Institute of Agricultural, Environmental and Energy Engineering contributes to the deliverables "GHG emissions during slurry storage" and "Identification of region specific mitigation measures and strategies". The Institute of Landscape Architecture and Landscape management participates in the determination of emission factors for N2O from organic and conventional agriculture.
