Breeding pairs and breeding sites of the grey heron in Lower Austria 2004 - 2008
Abstract
Basic data about the actual number of breeding pairs, the location and status of breeding sites are essential to discuss the impact of fisheating birds on fish populations and aquatic systems in general. Starting with the winter period 2003/04 the provincial government of Lower Austria issued a time-limited regulation, which allowed the harassment and shooting of grey herons in the country. An accompanying monitoring program was assigned. During the years 2004 – 2008 survey and mapping of the known breeding sites will take place to collect data about the actual number of grey heron breeding pairs. The survey program will also include site control by plane. Shot grey herons will be collected and investigated for further leading scientific applied research.
