Development of a strategic instrument for integrated assessment of ecological restoration measures in running waters.
Abstract
The aim of the project is to develop a strategic instrument for the identification of hydromorphological restoration measures of prior importance in support of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Amongst aquatic organisms fishes are the most sensitive species for hydromorphological pressures in rivers and in particulate for continuum disruptions. Therfore, they are ideal indicators to analyse the realtionships between chemical/physical pressures and response of aquatic biota. In this study we will compile a comprehensive database (> 1000 sites) on both (1) human pressures such as river channelisation, hydro peaking, flow abstraction, reservoir flushing, continuum disruption, etc. and (2) fish fauna (fish indices). Multivariate analyses on multiple spatial and temporal scales will enable to quanitfy pressure-fish relationships and to use developed models to predict required restoration measures in order to achieve a good ecological status sensu WFD.
