Bioinspired synthesis of novel silica structures based on S-layer lattices
Abstract
Currently there is much interest in the synthesis of inorganic materials using biomimetic approaches. One of the best examples is the synthesis of amorphous silica by synthetic systems based on principles learned from nature. The current understanding of the key proteins (silicateins and sillafins), genes and molecular mechanisms involved in the bioinspired formation of silica structures lays foundation for investigating the potential of native and genetically engineered S-layer proteins and their self-assembly products as catalysts, templates and scaffolds for the generation of novel silica architectures. Conformation and orientation of the functionality will be essential to the formation of oriented silica structures. In particular, the reciprocal influence between the process parameters and S-layer protein modifications will be studied in detail, optimized and eventually used for the directed growth of silica into novel nano- to micrometer sized architectures.
