Transdisciplinary Doctoral School Sustainable Development
Abstract
BOKU University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, will implement a doctoral school in cooperation with proVISION, the national sustainability research programme of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture (BMBWK), with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW), the Provincial Governments of Lower Austria and Styria and the City Government of Vienna. The aim of the project is to reform doctoral studies and to improve the funding of young scientists. This kind of post graduate training program is designed for students who have the possibility of carrying out high level research within the framework of an extensive research network. The doctoral candidates are provided with a structured doctoral program, subsidies and optimal supervision services. Doctoral schools can thus be seen as an instrument for the funding of students as well as of research. The project is scheduled to start in March 2007 and to run over a period of three years (six semesters). The BOKU provides the entire infrastructure such as premises, labour costs of the teachers, marketing costs and administration. The above-named partner organisations cover the expenses of the students (labour costs, means for travelling and consumables). The doctoral school "Sustainable Development” has a strong orientation towards future and wants to give room to unconventional issues and new, innovative ideas. As proVISION focuses on sustainability, inter- and transdisciplinarity are basic aspects of the research processes within this program. In connection with doctoral studies, this results in numerous challenges regarding organisation and methodology. In dealing with these challenges the planned doctoral school wants to develop new strategies and thus play a key role in the Austrian research landscape. In the long run the project should initiate lasting academic discourse beyond disciplinary borders and long-term transdisciplinary collaboration. In addition to that it is seen as initiative for the implementation of a durable and structured doctoral program of high quality that aids the BOKU in staying internationally competitive. The Docvtoral School should also make a contribution to an increase of the number of female doctoral students and scientists. The research is meant to engage in the fields of climate change, spatial development, tourism and quality of life. The participants will study these topics and their interdependences with regard to the ecological, social and economical context and effects. The research program will be guided by eleven scientists from the BOKU, coming from natural, social, planning, technical sciences and economics. Besides their disciplinary excellence the teachers have interdisciplinary experience and special didactic knowledge. The participating doctoral candidates will be offered a special doctoral school programme and an employment over the period of three years. Students, teachers and transdisciplinary partners together form the doctoral school. Quality assurance is based on a current evaluation of the research progress, an evaluation of the entire project and of the findings.
