Model region for Sustainable Forest Management in Nature Park Mürzer Oberland
Abstract
It is a challenge to balance ecological, economic and social functions in forests. New inputs come from the international discussion on Sustainable Forest Management with criteria and indicators developed for this purpose. In the 2nd "Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe" (MCPFE) in Helsinki 1993 sustainable forest management has been defined. But in the implementation there is space for adaptations. Part of the project is to develop a model for Austria that takes into account the special situation of the Nature Park and regional characteristics. Basis of the project are the pan European Criteria for Sustainable Forest Management as well as the goals of the Nature Park. Aim of the project is to develop a framework and monitoring system for the future development of the Nature Park. This makes it necessary to adapt the concepts and criteria to the local situation and define additional criteria if need be. Further goals of the project are: - Transparent method and development - Conservation and protection of natural resources - Consideration of regional economics - Public relations and societal discussion of social function of forests
