Abstract
Poly- and heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are toxic and carcinogenic groundwater contaminants and present at most tar-oil contaminated sites. The sustainable remediation of these sites employing bioremediation is significantly impeded by their largely persistent nature under the anaerobic conditions typically prevailing at these sites. In the present research project „HetReMed“ the applicability of extracellular RedOx-mediators to facilitate the anaerobic biodegradation of aromatic hydrocarbons is investigated and will be applied in pilot scale at a contaminated site in Upper Austria.
