Sustainable, Environmentally-Friendly and Resource-Saving Integrated Management of Slopes
Abstract
Vegetated slopes are an integral part of railway infrastructures. These green areas along railways have to fulfil specific requirements taking into account not just geotechnical and railway safety criteria but also nature protection and environmental aspects. Vegetation plays a key role for the slope assessment of different functionalities. These issues are not only from a spatial significance however they have mainly to be considered under the aspect of temporal dynamic change and also specifically climate change effects. Such „green slopes“ are well integrated into the landscape, optimize resource management and result in long term and sustainable benefits related to the mitigation of climate change. The stress on the vegetation system is high due to the extreme local climate condition. The integrated potential (railway safety and environmental issues) of vegetation stands is manageable under the prerequisite of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) models and Decision Support Systems (DSS) for maintenance measures. The project “GreenSlopes” is an integrated approach including all functions and all life cycles of “green railways slopes” to optimise the maintenance management with a specific focus of different spatial and temporal conditions as well as economic issues. Based on the existing sensitivity and conflict potential maps of green slopes, several test plots will be selected and different maintenance operation methods will be applied to cover the full range of all life cycles and climate change effects.
