Resource Efficient Food and dRink for the Entire Supply cHain
Abstract
he aim of REFRESH is to contribute significantly towards the objective of reducing food waste across the EU by 30% by 2025 and maximise the value from food waste and packaging materials. To achieve this ambitious objective, we will adopt a systemic approach, by a team experienced in delivering impact, and in cutting edge science to enable action. Central in the REFRESH project is the Framework for Action that will enable collaborative working, supported by tools to allow targeted cost effective interventions. All of which will support transformation towards a more sustainable EU food system working across the food cycle, with strategic agreements across all stages of the supply chain. A public-private collaboration is envisioned, including commitments and ownership of actors in businesses, governments, scientists, and community-based organisations. The main focus areas of the REFRESH vision are: • Significantly reduce consumer food waste, by effective consumer engagement leading to behaviour change based on consumer insights research across Europe to develop intervention strategies • The Frameworks for Action, and evidence and action-based guidance and tools will empower and guide business to reduce food waste across the grocery and food service supply chains. Allowing best practice to be developed, shared and implemented across member states • Maximise the value obtained from resources leaving the food supply chain. Major targets for improvement are the diversion of food waste to feed, biobased materials or healthy food ingredients. In addition, REFRESH will optimise the resources used in packaging, reducing its environmental impact and cost, whilst maximising its potential to help reduce food waste • Deliver evidence to support the transition process. The impacts and consequences of options and scenario’s for reducing food waste and improved valorisation will be assessed via social-economic and environment models, advising on a harmonised policy framework
