Quality Criteria for Citizen Science Projects
Abstract
Citizen Science is a method where the general public engages in scientific research, often under the guidance of professional scientists or scientific institutions. This method is widespread in many countries like the United States or the United Kingdom and is now gaining ground in the germanspeaking parts of Europe as well. Already there are numerous Citizen Science Projects in Austria (see www.citizen-science.at). To foster Citizen Science it is paramount to evaluate the quality of proposed projects. A quality criteria catalogue for Citizen Science project proposals will be established for the area of ecological projects, that will give funding assistance and help evaluate these proposals. For this the catalogue will deal with general aspects of Citizen Science projects, communication and media activities, data quality and open science. A first draft version will be submited to national and international Citizen Science experts for consultation. Their feedback will be incorporated in the final version of the catalogue.
