Flowcytometry for the microbiological characterisation of water resources
Abstract
The assessment of the microbiological quality of drinking water mainly relies on culture-dependent standard parameters, such as coliforms or pseudomonas spp. Technological and methodological developments clearly show that microbial dynamics in aquatic systems cannot be described through legal parameters and further are not fast enough to make active decisions. The flowcytometric aquired parameter, the so called total cell count (TCC) and the subpopulations with high and low nucleic acid content (HNA/LNA-cells) are now applied for drinking water and other water matrices. This allows to monitor rapid changes in aquatic systems as well as indicating a biological stable water. The elaboration and extension of (new) water relevant flowcytometric parameters to allow an in-depth water fingerprint to serve as valuable monitoring tool for water suppliers, is of highest importance. Data aquisition, storage and transfer should result in an optimal workflow (from bench to supplier) relying on fundamental statistical evaluation.
