The resource potential of the Austrian industry in a Circular Economy
Abstract
The closing of material cycles a principle element of the circular economy concept which aims at re-introducing secondary material flows (in other words, material, that at some point was considered waste) back into the economy. This project investigates the currently not utilised resource potential in the Austrian economy, as well as associated barriers and drivers. The determining economic mechanism for recovery and use of secondary materials will be demonstrated using successfully operating material loops. The project will draw on methodology from economic input-output analysis for the mapping of mass flows in the Austria economy. Further, micro-economic assessments combined with inputs from experts will be used to illustrate the relationships between transaction costs and recycling revenues as marginal values. For relevant material flows the current level of recovery, future potentials for closing material loops and the determining economic mechanisms will be shown. Based in these analyses currently not utilised resource potentials will be identified and economic instruments and approaches deduced.
