Sustainable intensification of the pig value chain in Uganda – for improved rural livelihoods and enhanced food security
Abstract
Stakeholders to the pig value chain in Uganda – including women and men smallhold farmers, and other value chain actors – have identified poor pig genetics as a key constraint that requires urgent addressing through institutional, research and farmer level action. This participatory research project will work with stakeholders to achieve this. The project’s specific objective is to increase the productivity and profitability of the Ugandan smallholder pig enterprises through: identifying the most appropriate pig breed-type(s); developing a genetic improvement strategy to ensure the availability and accessibility of genetically superior pigs; and supporting the uptake and optimal management of the genetically superior pigs by women and men smallhold pig keepers. Results of the project will be: - Evidence base on the productivity and profitability of different household pig enterprises (in terms of pig breed or cross-breed types kept, and level of management) - Evidence base on the contribution to, and benefit from, different household pig enterprises from an intrahousehold perspective (i.e. that of household women, men, girls and boys) - More profitable and productive household pig enterprises, equitably benefiting household members, through use of the evidence base for decision making and via built smallholder capacity on pig management - Genetic improvement strategy for the smallhold pig sector of Uganda, designed and owned by stakeholders, and in initial stages of implementation in relation to the breed registration scheme Project activities. Project activities comprise elements of research, business development and capacity building, as it is recognised that these are jointly required to achieve the project results and objective.
