Scientific supervision of sampling planning for residual household waste sorting analysis in the state of Salzburg
Abstract
The application of a consistent and comparable methodology for waste sorting analyses is one key element for the evaluation of recycling quotas. The development of valid monitoring instruments is also stated in the European Unions´ Circular Economy Package. Ambitions to standardize sorting analyses exist for more than 15 years. The establishment of sampling plans to conduct household waste sorting analyses is a complex intersection of waste logistics, waste engineering and also statistics. Futhermore it has major impact on the relation between information yield on the one hand and expenses on the other hand. Goal of the project is to guarantee a national comparability of results gained through future sorting analyses. Therefor all Austrian provinces committed to the compliance with the guidelines of the “Leitfaden für die Durchführung von Restmüll-Sortieranalysen”. Scientific monitoring of the process allows a consistent procedure of the sampling planning. The establishment of sampling plans has pilot character and allows the evaluation of the stated scientific methodology. Empirical values are the foundation for future research and the development of existing technical standards in this field.
