Mechanical Disintegration
Abstract
Different disintegration methods of wood determine particle morphology, geometry, size, and orientation of the wood fibres within the particles. With respect to mechanical-engineering conventional cutting technologies are highly developed processes. From a raw-material point of view, especially for other renewable raw materials but also for wood with its complicated composition, basic understanding of disintegration processes is poor and mainly based on old literature. Investigations of this project will therefore focus on the basic understanding and based thereon on the optimisation of existent disintegration methods with respect of energy consumption and particle quality. Particularly, special subjects like thin-cutting (band- and frame-saw) shredding (knife ring flaker), and refining process will be studied to improve the basic understanding of these technologies. Beside conventional cutting technologies research will also focus on alternative disintegration methods of wood. In conclusion it is claimed that: the thorough understanding of mechanical disintegration processes leads to an increased process efficiency (yield and energy consumption), enhanced surface and particle quality, increased tool-life and a processability of various renewable raw materials.
