Consumer motifs for local food consumption
Abstract
Consumer demand for local products has considerably increased over the last decade. International studies show underlying motifs to be multifaceted. They comprise, among other things, a desire to support the local economy, to contribute to a more sustainable economy, as well as to use them as a vehicle of self-identification (e.g., Shimp/Sharma 1987; Gineikiene et al. 2016). The relative importance of these and other motifs have not yet been empirically examined. The current project aims to quantify their relative importance based on an Austrian consumer sample. Against this background, it empirically examines the weights in a simulated purchase decision for selected food products. This study contributes to academic literature by providing an intergrated picture of consumer motifs for local consumption. For managerial purposes, these results will guide market communication for promoting local food.
