FARMER CLUSTERS FOR REALISING AGROBIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT ACROSS EUROPE-Zoological Surveys
Abstract
FRAMEwork is built around the "Farmer Cluster" approach, which runs from the bottom up, is managed by farmers and has been successfully implemented in the UK on over a quarter of a million hectares. FRAMEWORK will enrich and innovate existing farmer clusters by connecting with local and (inter)national stakeholders and establishing new multi-stakeholder farmer clusters in different farming systems across Europe based on existing collaborations. The Farmer Clusters will be brought together in a pan-European, self-sustaining network, the Citizen Observatory and Information Hub, which will facilitate the collection and exchange of harmonised, high quality information on biodiversity and agriculture among farmers and citizens, and develop dedicated online and offline activities to increase awareness and understanding of biodiversity and BSF among the different stakeholders in Europe. The scientific contribution to these citizen-oriented activities will deliver the following results: 1) Advanced ecological understanding of the drivers of biodiversity change in agricultural landscapes; 2) a decision support tool (DST) for the selection of biodiversity sensitive management by farmers based on their local requirements; 3) a DST to support biodiversity targeting, monitoring and assessment; and 4) private and public incentives to promote biodiversity sensitive agriculture as a public good. In addition, FRAMEwork will assess the effectiveness of the Farmer-Cluster approach to develop and implement site- and system-specific biodiversity-sensitive farming practices and evaluate economic and environmental performance, with a permanent online evaluation tool available at the Citizen Observatory and Information Hub. The Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of DST ranges from 3-5, with improvements planned for TRL5-DST, while DST in TRL3 will be brought to TRL4-5 through testing and improvements in the farmer clusters. FRAMEwork will be innovative in the way it will implement EU ethics, privacy and gender legislation. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
