Historic development of the Beer garden, Wenzgasse 12, 1130 Vienna
Abstract
The Villa Beer, Wenzgasse 12, 1130 Vienna, built from 1929 to 1931 according to the plans of Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach, is an outstanding example of Viennese Modernism and has been a listed building since 1987. It is therefore of particular scholarly interest to research the history of the approximately 2,800 m2 garden. Following this goal, the following research questions arise: What contribution does the garden make to the garden-cultural development of Viennese modernism? Which layers of the garden's history can be documented on the basis of historical sources? How does the current inventory correspond to preceding periods and are there relicts? What did the historical planting concept look like and what analogies can be drawn from the analysis of contemporaneous projects? How can a future development of the garden, especially with regard to the planting of woody plants and perennials, react to the historical context, the local conditions and the new climatic conditions as well as take into account the current requirements of use? The treatment of historical questions is part of the research field "History of Landscape Architecture" at the Institute of Landscape Architecture. In recent years, the ILA has developed extensive expertise on gardens of the 19th and 20th centuries and on site- and climate-appropriate plant use, especially for eastern Austria. The results are - in continuation of previously published works in the research field - scientifically published.
