Management concept for small scaled forests in Burgenland
Abstract
Small forests in Burgenland makeup almost 60 % of the total forest area in the country. Despite the high growing stock and the favorable site conditions for timber harvesting, structural disadvantages – the average size of a forest property is 4.8 hectare with average plots 0.4 hectare wide, cause considerable difficulties with forest management. To counteract these structural disadvantages and to satisfy the increasing demand for sawmill timber and industrial wood as well as to reduce the lack of thinning, a few management and marketing communities were founded. The new organization units reached their financial limitations quickly due to the high invoice and administrative costs associated with having to reference each individual plot. Therefore, new and more efficient cooperation models need to be developed. Under the project BURGWAL, existing cooperation shall be adapted and new management models must be defined to keep the value adding on the site and to use the potential from the small forests. It is the aim of the project to mobilize the timber with professional, sustainable forest management as well as the reduction of harvesting and administration costs. A process analyses was carried out for selected project partner enterprises. Based on the results and with additional investigations, a debit model for management units will be developed. An area comprised of very small plots and very little management will be used to demonstrate the potential of these cooperative management. The use of modern technologies – such as satellite navigation – is evaluated in the review of the literature.
