Landuse and farm structure in the area of Nußberg and Reisenberg in Vienna - Economic and socio-economic situation of farms a case-study in Grinzing
Abstract
The reputation of Grinzing still based on viticulture and the so called “Heurigen”. Due to changes in farm structure and the decline of the once very important coach tourism Grinzing is faced with a new situation. In addition, the attractively of Grinzing and the surrounding vineyards as a recreational area and for individual tourism is declining. Against this background of the economic and socio-economic situation viticulture in the study region is the topic of this study. It analyzes the essential determining parameters of the land use and development of winery. This will take place by a case study; three typical are subject of the study. As case studies serve (1) a larger wineries, such as the abbey of Klosterneuburg, (2) a medium winery that drives a so called “Buschenschank” and (3) a very small "hobby grower". The most important basis for analysis isd a farm survey. To gain this data the personal interview, based on standardized questionnaire will take place. In addition to that the accounting records, the IACS data, and the digital field map. The first step is an analyze of the natural and anthropogenic-site conditions. Hereby issues of land like location, slope, size, internal and external accessibility of the vineyards are the object of research. Based on the farm survey, the farm organization, vineyard and winery management as well as marketing are analyzed. The economic analysis includes profitability, stability and liquidity issues. This requires a balance sheet analysis. In addition to the economic are socio-economic analysis take place. It focuses on questions of work load and labour management. Other operational and social aspects such as the family situation and the development of the holding in recent years as well as plans for future development complete the analysis. The results of the economic and social considerations as well as the findings in term of labour are brought together in a SWOT analysis at the level of individual farms. The considerations to land use and marketing (especially the “Buscheschänken”) allow conclusions about the contribution of individual winerys to tourism in the study area. Based on the SWOT analysis, a qualitative assessment of the opportunities and threats for the analyses holdings takes place.
