StartClim2010.D: Integrated precautionary and adaptation measures for the Marchfeld region
Abstract
The Marchfeld is an important cereal and vegetable production region in Austria. The regional impacts of climate change and extreme weather events (e.g. droughts) require integrated adaptation and precautionary measures in a region, because a single sectoral adaptation strategy can lead to adverse adaptation effects in other sectors and sub-regions. For instance, irrigation can be the best adaptation option to climate change for farmers in a region. However, large-scale irrigation can decrease the ground water level and may reduce the local and regional drinking water supply. Thus, the consideration of indirect negative effects of sectoral adaptation options in a national and integrated adaptation strategy is of importance and essential for a precautionary disaster management plan. Using Integrated Modeling in combination with expert interviews, direct and indirect effects of agricultural adaptation measures will be assessed for the region Marchfeld. The results will be presented and discussed with experts, regional stakeholders, and farmers and shall emerge towards a regional integrative adaptation strategy for the Marchfeld that prevents catastrophic outcomes.
