StartClim2010.G: Knowledge based platform to ptimize operations strategies in handling natural hazards
Abstract
Natural disasters pose a challenge to our society again and again. Having the floods of recent years still in mind, which hit large areas of Austria, we again witnessed the necessity of a well-performing disaster management. This extreme event showed us impressively the importance of comprising and precaution oriented network activity. Extensive planning efforts on the level of authorities and emergency services, science and awareness-raising of the population are indispensable to be adequately prepared for disaster and to respond in an appropriate way. The integration of scientific findings into practical disaster management is of increased importance. The proposed project should help to foster knowledge exchange between the stakeholders concerned whereas the project´s main goal is to capture the actual level of knowledge in managing natural hazards and to provide this information over a network to stakeholders. In the contemporary disaster management a comparable constellation in Austria does not exist, which is of major importance in the sense of an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach in researching and analyzing disasters. Fundament of this network is an overview of projects already existing, completed and in progress respectively in regard to potential effects of climate change.
