Detailed analysis of transferable antibiotic resistance genes

Abstract
Within the ACE-ART project the relevance of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus spp., Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactococcus lactis) and bifidobacteria as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes was assessed. Results of this project as well as continuative studies revealed that especially Lactobacillus acidophilus group strains of animal origin harboured resistance genes. As the localisation of a resistance gene on a plasmid constitutes a high risk for the transfer of resistances, the genetic localisation of detected resistance genes will be investigated. Furthermore, conjugative experiments are planned to test the transferability of antibiotic resistances.
