Scientific foundations for identifying ecologically sensitive river stretches of the Alpine Arc
Abstract
Scientific foundations for identifying ecologically sensitive river stretches of the Alpine Arc (Future of Alpine Rivers) The project „Future of Alpine Freshwaters“ aims to provide sound, integrative basics for assigning protection and restoration priorities in river management. Therefore area-wide river related data for the alpine region will be gathered and harmonized. From a scientific perspective, the aim is to generate a comprehensive and consistent geo-database with available data on geomorphologic, hydrologic and biological parameters of the big river systems in the Alps in a first project phase. In the second project phase, ecologically sensitive river stretches are reported, based on their ecological and hydromorphological state, their biological continuity and their possible location in protected areas. The project results should enable stakeholders in river management and nature protection to put future projects and decisions in a broader, alpine wide context.
